Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) relates to the eye and vision-related issues and concerns that are caused by extended computer usage. Symptoms of CVS include blurred vision, eyestrain, headaches, and dry, irritated eyes. Many factors may contribute to these symptoms, but ultimately, the length of time that one spends looking at their computer monitor determines the severity of what the CVS sufferer experiences.

If you must be at a computer for extended periods of time, you are advised to rest your eyes by giving them breaks. Monitors should be set at appropriate viewing distances, adequate lighting should reduce the glare off your computer screen, and humidity controls and artificial tears should be used to manage eye irritation and discomfort. An annual eye examination with your eye care professional is essential to determine your dry eye treatment strategy and to decide whether computer glasses, which use anti-glare lenses, can eliminate many of your CVS symptoms.

Although the symptoms of CVS are generally temporary, where they will reduce once the computer work is complete, some symptoms may continue past that point. If the impairment of your visual abilities persists, it is recommended that you attend to the source of the problem immediately so they do not exacerbate further.
